The numbers can finally add up and still leave you asking a harder question: is this actually it? We slow down and look at the inner side of financial success, the part most people never say out loud. I’m joined by Dan, an executive, investor, and author with decades of experience across real estate, lending, blockchain, healthcare, and wealth management, to talk about what it really takes to build wealth without losing yourself in the process.

We dig into one of the biggest misconceptions about money: that peace arrives with the portfolio. Dan shares why the traits that make great entrepreneurs, drive, speed, relentlessness, can become difficult to switch off, and how that can quietly cost you family time, friendships, and self recognition. We also explore a surprising “luxury” that wealth can create: free brain time, the mental space to think clearly, consult pros like CPAs and estate attorneys, and actually apply what you learn to protect what you’ve built.

Then we get practical. We talk about starting early with small personal finance habits, using wealth as a tool rather than a scoreboard, and making risk management real through de-risking, protecting principal, and testing uncertain bets without endangering the life you are building. Dan also shares a simple gratitude practice to reframe stress and train your attention toward opportunity, connection, and meaning.

If you want a healthier wealth mindset, smarter investing behavior, and a way to pursue financial independence while staying human, this conversation is for you. Subscribe, share it with someone who’s building, and leave a review with the one idea you’re going to apply this week.

When Success Feels Strangely Empty

SPEAKER_00

Dear listeners, you know, like there's this quiet moment that comes when you realize the numbers finally add up. The portfolio looks good, the properties are aligned, the accounts are growing, and yet something in you asks that is it actually it? I believe some of you have all uh always thought about it, right? So because wealth, the real kind, the kind that lets you sleep at night and wake up with the kind of purpose, that's not just about what you have built. It's all about who you become or became while building it and whether you can uh still recognize yourself when you get there, right? So, hey dear listeners, welcome back to another powerful episode of Mind Meets Machine. I'm your host, Awake, and this is the podcast where we slow down long enough to ask the questions that matter. Like today we are sitting down with someone who's spent more than 25 years building companies, managing wealth, learning what it actually takes to create something that lasts, not just financially, but personally. Right. So please welcome my guest, Dan Peach.

SPEAKER_01

So welcome to the show. Thank you so much for having me. It's a it's a pleasure to be on and an and an honor. And I hope I can live up to that introduction.

SPEAKER_00

Definitely you are. So dear listen, like before we get into the discussion, I'll quickly left and introduce you with Dan. So Dan is an executive investor and the author who's worked across real estate, lending, blockchain, healthcare, and wealth management. And he's uh also written exclusively or I mean extensively about what sophisticated investors actually need to know about like not just to grow wealth, but protect that, use it wisely and stay human in the process. That is much more important, right? So real as well as I'm not in much of time uh because there are a lot of things to discuss with Dan. So let's get started.

The Myth That Money Brings Peace

SPEAKER_00

So Dan, just today, uh, we want to uh I'm I mean definitely I want to start with something that I think a lot of people believe, but they rarely say out loud that there's this idea that once you reach at a certain level of the financial success, the psychological stuff is the I mean it it just kind of sorts itself out that clarity comes with the capital, that uh pace arrives with the portfolio. So what do you think? I mean, what is the biggest misconception here that people carry about wealth and their relationship to it?

SPEAKER_01

That's a really insightful question. Maybe I can answer in two parts uh, you know, my my own personal experience and then also what I've observed with, you know, the wealth management clients of mine. Yeah, I think I think you're asking a really important question from my own perspective, you know. It's it's uh it's something that has been on my mind lately, right? So as a as an entrepreneur, the one of the underlying, I don't know if you want to call it a skill set, but but character qualities is you know, just driving hard and driving fast and uh refusing to accept defeat, you know, just keep going and and keep pushing forward. And then at some point, you know, ha if that's the character trait that got you to your level of success, you know, can you switch it off, right? Like do you s can you actually stop being yourself, you know, or can you deny that part of yourself that got got you to where you are? I don't know that I have the answer to that. I'm it's something that I'm personally struggling with. You know, how how do you now once you've reached a certain level, how do you start to add in balance for, you know, the family time that you've neglected as you were building, or you know, the relationships of your friends that you didn't hang out at the group activities because you know you had another employee meeting or an investor meeting or something like that. So yeah, I I I think it I think it's a really important question to discuss.

SPEAKER_00

And because uh this belt part is definitely very important, I believe. And when you see I mean I mean when uh maybe we have I I believe we have already seen it. So when you see this kind of misconception play out in the real estate, so with someone who's already built something significant, so what does that unraveling actually look

Free Brain Time And What It Reveals

SPEAKER_00

like? So yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I think uh I think one of the one of the advantages of someone that has spent a whole lifetime and a career building wealth, yeah, if they're if they're doing it nicely, one of the luxuries that I've noticed that enables them it's it's sort of the the top level concept to really address what you said at the beginning, you know, not only build the wealth, but how do you establish a framework to make sure you're protecting it and it and it's something that lasts? And it's it's really the luxury of free brain time. If you notice, there's there's kind of the the luxury brands have started altering their marketing around this concept, really. They're they're sort of targeting that. But it what it is what it means is you know, you're you're no longer in the daily grind. You have the you don't have that money pressure where you have to constantly make another dollar to pay another dollar of uh of bills, but you have the free time just to sort of think and be in your head, or maybe it means you now have the free time to consult with professionals, you know, trust an estate attorney or the CPA or the high-level advisor or the high-level business consultant. So, and then not only to consult with those, but just have the free brain time to sort of absorb all of that information and think about how to apply it to your life. And that's my recommendation. It's something I'm trying for, even though I'm still in that, you know, I feel like I'm in that grind mode. I try to carve out just free brain time where there's really I I don't have any particular expectation of myself or no one else for the next hour or whatever. And I just kind of let my brain go where it goes.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. I can understand, yeah. Yeah. I mean, obviously it's the interesting, I mean, uh how often we conflict security with certainty. So we think if the foundation is solid enough, we won't have to keep checking it. But yeah, I mean, build like anything we build, it doesn't eliminate the equation. So yeah, yeah, definitely.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I think I think what I've observed also is uh you know, to your point, sorry to interrupt, is that's something that I've I've noticed with a lot of really wealthy people. You know, a lot a lot of that, whatever it was that motivated them to have accumulated that wealth came from something somewhere, you know. Um maybe it was, you know, some hardship that they had as a child, maybe it was some event, maybe it was the country where they were living, you know, there was a war and now they've relocated. So there's that underlying sort of drive that got them to where they are, and it doesn't always go away, you know. It's it's hard to find that peace because whatever drove you to that achieve that success doesn't necessarily go away now that you have the success. You have to you have to be mindful and intentional about that as well.

SPEAKER_00

I really thank you for sharing that.

Gratitude As A Daily Reframe

SPEAKER_00

And so so I mean, uh is there a moment like a turning point maybe where someone starts to realize that the strategy they have been running is not actually kind of serving the life that they want to live. Anything uh they can't Wow.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, those are those are the big questions, right? Like w wh why are we here and why are we doing this? And have I have I achieved it? Yeah, I think uh I think as you get older, um I can only speak for myself, uh I guess, you know, you reach a point where I I think if you live long enough and you have enough failures, you learn. Which you it yeah, it you know, you hopefully you learn from.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You know, at a certain point, that that creates a context for what you're doing now, right? Like you you make your plan, okay, here's what I'm working towards. I'm gonna achieve this and this and this, and that will mean stability for my family, you know, this kind of future for my kids. Uh I can help my friends, whatever it is. But you have that underlying thoughts about, well, last time I tried that, you know, I missed the mark or I failed completely or whatever. And so it it absolutely informs how we move forward. And for me, you know, I just try to reframe all of that in my mind as gratitude. Every morning I wake up before I touch a device, before I, you know, engage with the world, you know, I try to run through a sort of mental script of being grateful for even the hard things in my past because everything has led me to where I'm at today, and just remind myself to be grateful for the small things. And you know, if if you you're when we first wake up, there's this moment, it's about seven minutes between when our brain is transitioning from the sleep state to the awake awareness state. And that intermittent seven minutes is when our brain is most receptive to whatever thoughts we're feeding it. So that's kind of our target sweet spot. And for me, that's been super helpful. I don't I don't get frustrated when things go wrong throughout the day, just the normal course of stuff. I it's really enabled me to start having the ability to reframe that as as gratitude. Hey, yeah, maybe I'm having a problem with this deal, but there's a hundred people in line behind me that would gladly take my place to have the opportunity to do this. So I try to l I try to reframe all of that as gratitude.

SPEAKER_00

I agree. I agree with you. And and um also if you talk about our daily life, right, if we day part, because most people are not kind of managing the multi-million dollar portfolios, but they are still carrying their weight around the money, around what it means, around whether they're doing it right or

Small Habits That Build Wealth

SPEAKER_00

not. So, how does this tension between accumulation and meaning show up in the smaller, uh, quieter decisions people make?

SPEAKER_01

I think that uh depends on where you are in the stage of your life. You know, if you're if you're in the early stages of of building, then that money seems maybe fleeting and seems not important, right? Like if you're trying to start your career and you're on the, you know, as most people starting their career on, they're on the lower end of how much they can earn and how much they can make. Maybe you have the attitude of, you know, it's not that important because it's not that much money anyway. But I I think that's a mistake. I think you start as early as you can, carve out even some small amount, whatever it is, you know, and I know it's an international audience for this podcast, but I can my frame of reference is American dollars. You know, even even if it's fifty dollars a week or whatever the equivalent is, wherever you are, fifty dollars a month, what you know, whatever that number is, start building those habits and be intentional about that. Don't uh, you know, make sure you're you're framing that effort as something that's really valuable in your mind and and that will continue to grow as well as the money will continue to grow over time.

SPEAKER_00

Um exactly true. Yeah, yeah. And and also like uh so if someone I mean it's kind of I think uh for the listeners it'll help for sure. If someone's standing in that gap right now, they're feeling that weight of it. So what do you think? What is the one practical approach offer them? Say something that helps them move towards a relationship with wealth that actually feels aligned.

SPEAKER_01

So what what do you mean? I'm sorry, like what what gap are you thinking of?

SPEAKER_00

I mean I mean uh a gap in the sense like between optimizing for and what they're actually living for.

SPEAKER_01

So kind of I see what you're saying. Yeah, uh the balance between living and yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

Wealth As A Tool And De-Risking

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's boy, that's a tough one. Uh-huh. There's so much pressure, you know, especially on the providers for the family, whoever is assuming that role.

SPEAKER_00

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_01

You know, you you you come home and you see your kids and you want the best future for them, you want peaceful life for them, you know, we're humans. All of us want that same thing for our kids. And so whoever's providing for the family absolutely feels that pressure. And usually what that means is, you know, making money so that you can do that. Unfortunately, that's the world that we live in. Um, so how do you find the peace between that constant visual pressure and you know, those visual reminders when you see your kids? What I mean by that. And, you know, find that balance between that and uh and uh and producing wealth. And I think the secret is, you know, you using the wealth as as a as a tool. You know, it it's if you were building a house, you would have your set of tools that each thing accomplished, it's part of the process, right? You it's a different tool to build the the wooden framing, it's a different tool to run the plumbing, it's a different tool for pouring the the foundation, the concrete, if that's what you're using. Right. So the well uh the wealth really is just a different tool for you to achieve those goals that you've had. In this case, it's building the the house of your family's future. So think of it as that way and be intentional about it, de-risk where you can. It's very important. It's so much more difficult to rebuild after a loss than it is to have less earning going forward, right? So protect your principal, de-risk wherever you can. And if you're gonna take a risk that's unknown that you can't sort of de-risk, figure out a way to sort of incrementally test that without endangering the house that you're building.

SPEAKER_00

Very true, very true.

Train Your Attention Toward Opportunity

SPEAKER_00

So if you have to give one advice to the listeners today, what that will be?

SPEAKER_01

Try to be at peace with yourself and uh look for the opportunities in the world around us. You know, our you know, as humans, we have all of our five senses where we perceive the world. But one thing that's really interesting about our brains is, you know, every minute there's, you know, three million inputs of data surrounding us. And it all funnels through this one part of our brain that's only capable of processing between 30 and 40 of those. So there's so much in the world that's happening around us that we're just physically not capable of perceiving because of the limitation. It's this little small band in our brain, right? But we can we can tell that part of our brain what to let in and what to reject. So that's my biggest piece of advice is to start being intentional about telling yourself what you're looking for. You know, I'm I'm seeing opportunities every day. I'm mating, I'm making great connections with people that can influence my life. I'm being caring and loving for my kids, right? So we can start telling our brains to prioritize those things that are happening around us, and that will really change your life.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly.

How To Connect And Closing Reflections

SPEAKER_00

And if listeners wants to connect with you, what would be the great feeling to connect with?

SPEAKER_01

We uh my team and I, we run a great firm that builds, you know, takes good ideas and scales them into businesses. And we're at beachworks.com. B-E-E-C-H-U-E-R-K-S.com. Would love to connect with anyone on LinkedIn or or on our website.

SPEAKER_00

Amazing. So, dear listeners, what I'll do is I'll put all the links, details, everything into the show notes for easy reference. And uh I have to say uh thank you so much, Dan, for bringing this so much depth into this conversation. And I have to say that uh dear listeners, like we build a lot of things in life, right? Portfolios, business, reputations. The thing worth protecting is I mean, the most worth protecting is the relationship that you have with yourself when while you build them. So if to if today's conversation gave you uh even one question to sit with, something that helps you see that your own relationship is to the wealth or success a little differently than this conversation or update about it, meditative. So uh thank you so much for everyone for being here. I'm your host of weekend. This is my means of machine. I'd say until next time, stay curious, stay honest, and keep asking the questions that matter. So I'll see you in the next one. Thank you so much.
